The British Army under Sir Garnet Woolsley, attacked on the east of the fighting hill, Ferreira’s volunteers on the west and the Swazi impi on the south. The Swazis came over the hill behind Sekukuni’s kraal and drunk with smoking dagga, charged down the steep slope of the hill to the caves in which were old men and women and children. So much was the momentum of the charge, that those in front could not stop, they fell over the vertical face of the cliff and were crushed to death, those coming behind, went to the entrance of the caves. They put their ox hide shields to the mouth of the cave and, standing on one side, shouted “Chaela Mosuto“! The old Mosuto in the cave, fired at the shield, and the Swazi warriors rushed in and stabbed men, women and children to death with their assagais. At the same time, the British Army charged the fighting hill, in the caves in which were men, women and children of the Basuto. Before charging, the artillery bombed the hill on the east side. The troops climbed to the top of the hill. One officer stood on the top of the hill and shouted: “Hurrah! Victory!”. He was shot down from under by the natives in the cave. Ferreira and his volunteers charged over the elbow hill and fired a volley into the main kraal of Sekukuni.

The British could not get the Natives out of the caves of the Fighting Hill, they tried to blast them out with Gun-Cotton, but only succeeded in killing one old woman, one girl, and one child. The natives surrendered after a few days, because they were nearly dying of thirst. Sekukuni fled during the night and went to the cave of Semonuko south-west of the Leolo mountain, where he surrendered after a few days and was taken to prison in Pretoria.

After the death of Chief Sekwati, his son Sekukuni left with his people and resided at Tjate.
